The government is urging companies of all sizes to increase the resilience of their business to Cyber crime or other security breaches to safeguard assets and demonstrate their security credentials to stakeholders. The security of your business includes:

Physical security – security measures designed to deny unauthorized access to your facilities, equipment and resources. Protect your personnel and property from damage or harm (such as espionage, theft). Physical security involves the use of multiple layers of interdependent systems which can include CCTV, surveillance, access control, locks, protective barriers and many other techniques.

Business Continuity – encompasses planning and preparation to ensure that your business can continue to operate in case of serious incidents, security breaches or disasters and can recover to an operational state within a reasonably short period. As such, business continuity includes three key elements:

Resilience: critical business functions and the supporting infrastructure must be designed in such a way that they are materially unaffected by relevant disruptions, for example using redundancy and spare capacity

Recovery: arrangements must be made to recover or restore critical and less critical business functions that fail for some reason.

Contingency: the business establishes a generalised capability and readiness to cope effectively with whatever major incidents and disasters occur, including those that were not, and perhaps could not have been, foreseen. Contingency preparations constitute a last-resort response if resilience and recovery arrangements fail, and demonstrable systems and procedures will ensure your business is kept safe and is often a prerequisite for insurance. Proper planning lowers insurance premiums!

Cyber Security: also known as computer or IT security, provides protection of your businesses information systems from damage to hardware, software and to the information on them. It includes controlling physical access to hardware, protecting against unauthorised network access, WiFi, spam, or through malpractice by your staff, whether intentional, accidental or due to them just being tricked. There has been a huge upsurge in these threats due to increasing use of ‘The Cloud’ the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT), mobile working and ubiquitous use of smart devices.
