The Town of Eastbourne has a history going back to Roman times! The population in the Middle Ages were successful sheep farmers, general farmers and fishermen and these skills were the primary sources of income for the population of the town in those times.
Named after a small river called the ‘Burne’ in Motcombe which is in the ‘Old Town’, Eastbourne’s importance as a place of resistance to potential invasions was well in evidence by 1690. In this year there was a huge naval battle off the coast, between the English and Dutch Fleets fighting the French – which the English subsequently lost.
The threat of invasion from the French was perennial so a string of forts were built along the coast, there are a number of these ‘Martello Towers’, a type of Napoleonic fort, along the whole Sussex coast with the Redoubt and Wish Tower built in 1805.
It didn’t stop there, most of the Town had to be evacuated in 1940 when there was a major risk of the Germans invading and the Battle of Britain was in part played out over the residents’ heads. Nowadays, the French have finally managed to arrive in the Town – by having a splendid farmers market on the seafront throughout the year without ever having to fire a shot!
We have also reached out to the business community in Eastbourne too, with numerous hotels as customers, of which there are many fine establishments in the Town. We service a number of leading solicitors and accountants, as well as many in the care sector. Eastbourne has quite a large skilled manufacturing sector often unbeknown to the tourists who throng its beautiful seafront and beaches.
